First Assignment

Well, there has to be some preparation, right?

You can come to class cold, not read anything in preparation for this Sunday's class if you want. But you can't avoid it forever and you'll get more out of it if you read the first three chapters in Rubin and Babbie's 6th edition of Research Methods for Social Work.

Class will be presented by video, and I skip a lot and speak a little fast sometimes. So if you want to learn and reinforce what you're learning on your own (one way of learning) then read ahead of time. If there's no time, such is life.

The topics we'll cover (first three chapters of the 6th edition) include:

Why Study Research?

Evidence Based Practice

and Philosophy in Social Work Research, or philosophy and theory.


By the time you get to class on Sunday the videos of me teaching will be posted.

I think you should watch them as a group. There's class discussion to follow on some, and preparation for a quiz that you'll have after the first half hour of your second class (not at the Institute, but on-line).

I'm really sorry that we can't meet in person.
